Election Dread is Here

A polling station sits empty at a church in West Milton, Ohio, on March 16, 2020.

Don't look now but it's here.

It's the beginning of the Presidential election race.

I am NOT ready for this.

This is going to be ugly.  I don't talk much about politics on here because it has gotten crazy.  You lose friends and family depending on which side you are on.  It is no longer "we agree to disagree" anymore and stay friends.

Make no mistake, there is a clear division.  We aren't the UNITED States of America.  We are very much untied.  It is sad and no candidate is going to fix it.

We I first started voting in presidential elections many years ago, I never voted according to a candidate's party.  The most important thing to me was the character of the candidate regardless of party.  There is only one election that I didn't feel like I could vote for either and I did not vote that year.  Someone once said that what a candidate does in their personal life doesn't matter.  I totally disagree with that.  I believe it absolutely matters because those values dictates what kind of leader they are going to be.

As we enter another primary this week, I don't think I can deal with all of the junk that goes with it.

What really gripes me is that people judge whether or not you are a Christian because of your political party.  I recently saw a TikTok video where someone said very bluntly that it is impossible for someone to be a Christian if they are a Democrat.  I'm sure you can find someone who says the same about a Republican.

Can we stop this?  The division in politics should NEVER divide believers!

I would like to say more but I'm trying to restrain myself.  I will just issue this warning to anyone who professes to be a Christian or believe in Christ....do NOT fall for a candidate who tells you that he or she is the savior or compares themselves to Christ!

I came across these five things we need to remember to help us navigate this Presidential election nastiness so that we aren't dragged into it.

  1. Choose the Kingdom of God over the nation
  2. Choose Theology over Ideology
  3. Choose Christian Witness over Political Power
  4. Choose to Trust in God, Not A Political Candidate
We must grasp the fact that our government cannot save us! Only God can. We never read in the Bible where Jesus or any of the apostles expending any time or energy schooling believers on how to reform the pagan world of its idolatrous, immoral, and corrupt practices via the government. The apostles never called for believers to demonstrate civil disobedience to protest the Roman Empire’s unjust laws or brutal schemes. Instead, the apostles commanded the first-century Christians, as well as us today, to proclaim the gospel and live lives that give clear evidence to the gospel’s transforming power.

Remember that the Gospel is supposed to be Good News!
